Attacking your days doesn’t always work...

Let’s discuss why attack doesn't always work...

"Invincibility lies in the defence; the possibility of victory in the attack."

In sports, there’s a famous saying…

”Attack wins games, defence wins titles.”

Yet… in the world of performance…

You’re often told to attack your goals, your days, and your life…

And you may believe the best form of defence is attack.

Sure it may work… But it’s a short-term strategy, at the least, and a dangerous one to follow fully.

Why?

Well… the world of sports, business, and military history is filled with examples of all-out attack failing and failing in a BIG way.

Think… Napoleon and his invasion of Russia in 1812. Considered a classic example of overreaching. This same mistake was also made by a short, angry German dude just over 100 years later.

Think… Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. She aggressively promoted this groundbreaking blood testing technology… But it was all a lie. There was no viable product to defend her claims.

Think… Brazil in the World Cup Semi-Final in 2014. They went all-out attack against a solid German team. They nearly scored in the third minute… But this crazy attacking play let them down. By halftime, they had let 5 goals in. The game finished 7-1 to Germany.

In my own life, I’ve made this mistake…

In 2015… I was promoted to a General Sales Manager role in the store where I worked.

I thought I could do it all

I thought if I worked harder

I thought if I attacked each day

I would be able to avoid burnout and make it work.

I was so wrong.

2015 ended up being one of the most stressful years of my life.

Attacking my problems created a deeper hole for me to climb out off.

In 2016 I walked away from that job. I thought I had failed.

But in reality, I should have quit years ago. I was being taken advantage of by those above me. My commitment to attacking the problems blinded me from the truth.

So what does work?

If all-out attack doesn’t work… does all-out defence work?

Well… yes and now.

Think… Italy at the 2006 World Cup. They conceded only two goals the whole tournament. The Italians love defending. However this style of play has also seen them fail to qualify for the last two World Cups. But also won the European Championship in between.

Like full-out attack… full-out defence is a hit-or-miss strategy.

It’s also a limiting way to play at life and business. Always trying to avoid defeat is a boring un-fun approach.

So what really does work?

It’s a balanced approach of attack and defence.

It’s knowing when to attack… and when to circle the wagons to defend.

Think… the Patriots in their pomp. Their expansive attacking play, combined with one of the toughest defences, dominated the NFL for years.

Think… Serena Williams. She had it all… finesse, power, passion, attack and defence. The greatest female tennis player ever.

Think… Warren Buffet. Knowing for waiting to invest at the right time. You could call that defensive. But when he attacks, he attacks an investment. He is one of if not the greatest investors of all time.

That’s all super interesting… but how does it help you?

Regarding your self-performance in life and business, you need two pillars to help you attack and defend.

First, you need your fantastic foundations:

Your:

• Why

• Goals

• Vision

• Health

Call this your defence.

These areas keep you grounded, focused, and allow you to operate with high energy and purpose.

Second, you need solid structure:

Your:

• Daily habits

• Weekly review

• Deep work zones

• High-dollar activities

Call these your attack.

These areas allow you to attack each day and week. They give you the ability to do the right tasks at the right time and produce results.

Here’s the thing…

Going all out on one of these will still produce results… but you will likely hit barriers and burnout.

When you combine the two… you make success inevitable.

I’ve seen this work in my own life…

The ability to have good foundations and structure has helped me run a business for over two and a half years.

I’ve seen this work in my clients lives…

Good foundations and structure have helped them spend more time with family, increase MRR, or get out of a multi-year funk and drop dumb sh*t habits and overcome emotional BS.

That’s why I believe attack will win the day, but defence helps you win at life.

So the question I have for you today…

Do you need more attack or defence in your life?

Big love,

ST
