Episode 37: The only question you need to use in 2023
Welcome back to the Self-Performance-Strategies (S-P-S) Podcast
For the 1st episode of 2023, let’s talk about asking yourself questions.
As Voltaire said:
“Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.”
Do you ask yourself questions?
Do you ask yourself the right questions?
What if there was only one question you needed to know to succeed in your business and life?
Well, there is one question, and it rules all others.
The world of finance inspires this question.
It’s a question that gets you to the bottom line.
What is the question you ask?
Well, here it is:
“Knowing what I know now, would I…?”
Why is this a powerful question?
First, it allows you to reflect on your past decisions and actions from a new perspective.
By considering what you know now, you will gain insight into what you might have done differently and use that knowledge to make better choices in the future.
This helps you avoid repeating mistakes and make more informed decisions aligned with your values and goals.
Second, this question will help you identify areas where you are holding yourself back.
By considering what you would do differently with the knowledge and experience you have now.
You may realize that you have been limiting yourself in some way.
This helps you overcome those limitations and pursue your goals more effectively.
Third, it helps you stay focused on what is most important to you.
Helping you make the most of your time and achieve your goals more efficiently.
Finally, this question helps you cultivate a growth mindset and a sense of continuous improvement.
You acknowledge that you are learning and growing by asking yourself what you would do differently.
This will help you develop the resilience and determination needed to succeed in business and life.
Cool, Stephen, but how do you use and apply a question like that?
You apply it to your business and life in many areas:
- Your projects
- Your interests
- Your relationships
Ask yourself, “knowing what I know now, would I…”
- Continue with a specific project?
- Keep investing in a relationship?
- Go deeper with a hobby or skill?
This question gets you to the bottom line of what you want to focus on in 2023.
For example, I asked this question about which platforms I wanted to focus on to grow my business.
I quickly dropped Instagram and TikTok.
Because I am focused on improving my digital writing and, knowing what I know now, those platforms distract me from improving that skill.
This question helps me remove dumb sh*t stopping me from my core goals.
In my opinion, this is the best question to use if you want to focus on less and achieve more.
It forces you to be honest with yourself.
What relationships are draining you?
What pointless activities are you doing?
What low-ROI projects do you need to drop?
When you ask yourself this question, you will decide yes or no quickly and build plans from there.
You can strategically walk away from that relationship/activity or dive deeper into it.
How do you react to the answers you get?
Once I get the answers to this question, I put my current projects, activities, or relationships into 3 buckets:
1) Go Deeper
2) Continue as is
3) Stop and walk away
I review these buckets quarterly, similar to using the 80/20 philosophy: What areas provide the most results and rewards?
If you can figure out and organize all your activities and relationships into those 3 buckets, you will end up focusing on the high-value and high-$$$ areas of your life.
Ask yourself knowing what I know now, would I...? and see the results.
